With support of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Higher Education for Development (HED), the Africa-U.S Higher Education Initiative and the Association of African Universities are pleased to host this conference in Accra, Ghana from August 26 – 29, 2009.

In April 2009, 20 partnerships were selected from a pool of nearly 300 highly qualified applications in the Africa-U.S. Higher Education Initiative Planning Grant Competition. Partners were awarded grants of $50,000 each to develop plans that address national and regional development priorities throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and allow for long-term collaboration on capacity building.

This conference will provide a forum for these partnerships to present these developing plans. Partners will receive feedback from each other as well as from stakeholders and donors interested in African higher education development, allowing them to strengthen plans and foster relationships with stakeholders for future support.

Featured conference participants will include representatives from the lead African and U.S. institutions involved in the partnerships. Other key participants will include:

  • Representatives of USAID from Washington, DC
  • USAID bilateral and regional missions in Africa
  • U.S. Congressional staff with an interest in African higher education development
  • Interested foundations and private sector organizations, multilateral and international agencies, and other stakeholders and potential funders.

Approximately 100 participants will contribute to human and institutional capacity building efforts in Africa through higher education partnerships and help improve productive ties between African and U.S. higher education institutions.
